You stop fearing the devil when you’re holding his hand…

Nothing much exciting rolls through Violet White’s sleepy, seaside town… until River West comes along. River rents the guest house behind Violet’s crumbling estate, and as eerie, grim things start to happen, Violet begins to wonder about the boy living in her backyard.

Is River just a crooked-smiling liar with pretty eyes and a mysterious past? Or could he be something more?

Violet’s grandmother always warned her about the Devil, but she never said he could be a dark-haired boy who takes naps in the sun, who likes coffee, who kisses you in a cemetery… who makes you want to kiss back.

Violet’s already so knee-deep in love, she can’t see straight. And that’s just how River likes it.

Blending faded decadence and the thrilling dread of gothic horror, April Genevieve Tucholke weaves a dreamy, twisting contemporary romance, as gorgeously told as it is terrifying—a debut to watch.(

My Review:

I am not going to lie – I was scared to death to start reading Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.  First, the name is insanely long. Second, the cover is incredibly gorgeous (and was the reason I even picked up the book).  Third, and finally, I’m really hit and miss with paranormal, romance, young adult books.  Thankfully, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea was exactly what I was in the mood for and once I began to read, I started having a blast.

Sure, there are plenty of things in this book that didn’t make sense from an adult perspective.  Some random stranger moving into your guest house last minute and falling madly in lust with him?  Hmmm..no.  Also, the missing parents seem to follow a theme – but that precedent was set years ago.  Then there’s the bad guy who’s not a bad guy but is he a bad guy?  While it helps keep the momentum of the book going, you never actually figure anything out – frustrating, and I understand that later books are coming but still, I wanted to have a bit of something.

Still, the book was so addicting. I read feverishly because I needed to know.  I loved the gothic setting and the strange happenings throwing a gruesome twist into the story.  I loved the idea of hauntings happening and thought that my reading of this book during Halloween week was very well-timed.  And, as far as I was concerned, I was hugely entertained to the point where the wacky romance aspect really didn’t bug me much and that’s saying something.

So while there were holes and gaps in the story, they didn’t distract from the overall entertainment value.  Given that there are so many books out there in the Young Adult genre that bore me to tears, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea was a welcome distraction.
